9 + miles...with the knee
Here is an early morning snap shot of me after my official first training run for the marathon. HAPPY and SWEATY!! I am getting a LATE start but trying to not think about that too much! My base is zero due to being hurt but thought since the half was just a few weeks ago...10 miles would be a place to start for my first long run. My running buddy is out of town so I sent out an S.O.S and got one brave (veteran) runner to join me. She was a wealth of knowledge and can run, run, run. Thanks Lisa S!! She was great and ran slow for me. I had to walk a few times (but it was very brief) and ended running 9.25 in 1:35. Not too bad considering that included my walking. I came home and rolled, took a cold shower and slipped on my recovery socks and took 2 Alleve. So I am looking quite stylish is 90 degree weather with flip flops and black socks. Mentally today was tough because I am not 100% and had to really listen to my body. I am sure it will take me at least two days to recover from nine miles. UGH!
Looking foward to a week of shorter runs and will brave the long one next weekend. Very exciting but scary...so worried that my next run wil be last run, due to my knee. Anyways hope everyone was able to squueze a run in before the summer heat! Also I am so excited to meet some new bloggy friends that are new followers...it has been fun checking out your blogs as well! Such a journey!!
Question: How long do you wear your recover socks after a long run?? Do you sleep in them? Should I try an ice bath next weekend??
THANKS and don't forget to enter my SWEATY BANDS giveaway!

Sounds like a great long run! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
i was looking at your picture trying to figure out where that was, then it finally hit me...the chevron station...im a doofus!
ive slept in sleeves and they actually feel really good. dont know about ice baths, never tried one.
I took an ice bath today. Second time in like a week. My legs have been giving me so much grief since the 10k. And its not even like that's a very long run! They are really nice. My massage therapist friend recommended 20 minutes in a bath with the coldest water you can stand, then drain, then 15 minutes with the hottest you can stand, then drain, and then 10 minutes again with the cold. It really loosens things up! I had a good run on Thursday and then yesterday was terrible! Hoping tomorrow I can get my long run in...
GREAT work Harm, seeing your picture made me want to give you a big sweaty HUG!! I wear my recovery socks after I shower all through the night and to the next day. I bought crocs to go over them, LOL! I dont wear them longer than that because it will dry out the skin. HUGS!! Keep those miles comin
That first long run is such a great one. It means, "Hey, Concrete, it's me. I'm ready to take you on again."
Keep the miles coming.
Thanks for the comment and to answer your question, no, I do not use a roller. What is that?
I had a 14-miler and skipped my ice bath. Then I got hurt. Just sayin' the ice baths work.
:)
Keeping my fingers crossed on the knee!
I don't use ice baths until I get up around 18 miles or so, but I'm used to high mileage, so I guess it's all relevant.
Sounds like a great run! What exactly are "recovery socks???" Good luck in Portland.
Awesome! I'm learning so much about running by reading your blog. I got a run in this morning before church and hoping I can squeeze in a few at noon this week at work.
I wear compression socks or sleeves almost all the time now. I, too, had wondered if you could wear them too much. I haven't experienced any dryness like Mel mentioned, so I guess I'm good!
Definitely try the ice bath!
A tip from my coach: get into the cold water first, and THEN dump the ice in. It will help you acclimate.
